Ashley worked in the television industry for many years before joining the team at CEMP. He lectures in media production, holds an MA in producing film and television, and is currently undertaking (in a unique collaboration with cross-platform media production company Magic Lantern) doctoral research in to children and their needs within cross-platform environments.
His experience includes producing and directing factual, news, continuity, promos, commercials, entertainment and comedy; often with an interactive slant, and mostly within Children's TV. As a producer/director, Ashley has worked with the likes of Sasha Baron Cohen, Dave Berry and Simon Amstell. Whilst at Nickelodeon he devised, produced and directed innovative interactive music shows and telephony led game shows. For BBC Children's (where he was part of the 2007 Emmy award winning interactive team) he created multi-platform content that spans web, red-button and linear broadcasts. More recent credits include directing CBBC’s stalwart Newsround, producing and directing a red-button sing-along application for CBeebies’ Lazy Town, and producing and directing the interactive video content (red-button/web) for CBBC’s Escape from Scorpion Island - a cross-platform game show filmed in the Queensland rainforest.
Ashley’s broadcast career began within MTV and LWT’s camera departments, and he still enjoys throwing a camera on the shoulder when the opportunity arrives. His other interests include: the ways in which UK children are influenced by American media; and how children structure narratives.
