Jon is the Director of the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice, the only HEFCE Centre for Excellence in the media area in the UK. The award of £4.5 million to the Centre recognises the Media School's commitment to innovation and excellence in learning and teaching.
He is responsible for pioneering a range of new techniques and technologies to support and enhance media practice learning and teaching, many of which are used in HE media institutions nationally including Parashoot and Box of Broadcasts.
Jon is also the course leader of MA Creative Media Practice and MA Creative and Media Education and is the pathway leader for the MBA (Media) and framework leader for the Short Courses for Media Professionals. He is also an external examiner at the Open University.
He is chair of the annual Media Education Summit and his research interests focus on practice learning, and workforce development, theories and methods in media education, new technologies and education. Jon has spoken at conferences nationally and internationally, and he is on the editorial board of the Media Education Research Journal.
Jon works extensively with media companies and has undertaken consultancy and led tailored sessions for Al Jazeera, News Corp, Endemol UK and Ofcom.
In 2004 Jon was awarded a Learning & Teaching Fellowship by Bournemouth University and was the University nomination for the International College of Teaching & Learning Award for 'Innovation in Teaching, Learning and Technology', which he was presented with in America in 2007. In January 2008 the National Association of Television Production Executives (NATPE) awarded him Educational Fellow status.
