Jon is the Director of the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice, the only HEFCE designated Centre for Excellence in the media area in the UK. In addition, Jon is on the senior leadership team for the Media School where he helps to manage the day-to-day affairs of the School. The Media School at Bournemouth University is the largest in the UK with 2800 students and an annual turnover of over £18 million.
Jon is the course leader of MA Creative Media Practice and MA Creative and Media Education and is the pathway leader for the MBA (Media) and framework leader for the Short Courses for Media Professionals. He is also an external examiner at the Open University and University of West of England.
He is chair of the annual Media Education Summit, he has spoken at conferences nationally and internationally, and he is on the editorial board of the Media Education Research Journal.
Jon is responsible for pioneering a range of new techniques and technologies to support and enhance media practice learning and teaching, many of which are used in HE media institutions nationally including Parashoot and Box of Broadcasts.
He works extensively with media companies and has undertaken consultancy and led tailored sessions and short courses for Al Jazeera, News Corp, Endemol UK, Pearson International, IMG Worldwide, the BBC and Ofcom.
Jon has completed research and project work for a range of organisations including Skillset, the Department of Culture Media and Sport, the Art Design & Media Higher Education Academy Subject Centre and has secured grant funding from the ESRC and TSB.
In 2004 Jon was awarded a Learning & Teaching Fellowship by Bournemouth University and was the University nomination for the International College of Teaching & Learning Award for 'Innovation in Teaching, Learning and Technology', which he was presented with in America in 2007. In January 2008 the National Association of Television Production Executives (NATPE) awarded him Educational Fellow status.
