One of the creative media’s industries most crucial resources is its workforce. In the last 10 years the industry has seen massive changes in technology, policy and organisational restructuring which have led to changes in the working conditions for its practitioners. How these changes impact on those individuals and the work they produce is of significant interest to reflect upon in relation to media pedagogy – what sort of view is represented and passed on? Whose voice is heard?
Looking at Skillset's data on the industry workforce compiled over the last decade doctoral researcher Tamsyn Dent is focusing on how these changes have specifically affected women. Using a combination of statistics and interviews with women who work or have worked in the industry, her PhD will investigate how different ‘workers’ have responded to the changes in the industry, whether some are excluded and what are the potential consequences of exclusion.
Doctoral Researcher Andy Tedd is looking at how journalists and factual programme-makers can expand their sources and be exposed to greater intellectual diversity through time and space by using social media.
