Peer Assisted Learning

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is a student-to-student support scheme for academic and personal development. Trained student leaders meet regularly with small groups of first year students to help them integrate into higher education, and develop their study and learning strategies. PAL sessions are about co-operative and collaborative learning, and centre on discussion and interaction.

First year students have reported that PAL was of benefit to them in terms of:

  • Adjusting to university life, studying and the HE culture
  • Collaborating with others
  • Having the value of the PAL leaders' perspective
  • Completing assignments
  • Developing study skills
  • Developing confidence with the course

Sue Court who leads PAL for the Centre has published widely on the topic. Of particular note is her recent article co-written with a PAL leader in the journal of Australasian Journal of Peer Learning which can be accessed at http://ro.uow.edu.au/ajpl/vol2/iss1/1
